Junior Interior Designer

Department: O'Brien Interiors Group
Location: Bloomfield Hills, MI

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Junior Interior Designer to be our in-house design expert for a portfolio of senior living communities. This role is a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of residents by creating safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environments. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, you will be a key contributor to all phases of the design process, ensuring every project adheres to building codes, specific program requirements, and our high standards of quality.

Responsibilities:

  • Design Development & Documentation: Assist in preparing comprehensive design drawings and documentation, including Room Finish Schedules, Material Legends, Flooring Diagrams, Furniture Plans, and 3D renderings using tools like SketchUp.
  • Material and Furniture Selection: Work with the Senior Interior Designer to select and specify materials, furnishings, and decor that align with program and project goals. Manage the ordering of samples and materials to complete the project scope.
  • Budget & Timeline Management: Help maintain project timelines and budgets by assisting with cost estimates and tracking expenses.
  • Project Execution: Attend furniture and project installations to ensure the successful completion of the design. Conduct final punch lists and closeout documentation as required.
  • Research & Trend Analysis: Maintain the design library and stay current on industry trends and new materials by coordinating vendor meetings and educational "lunch and learns."
  • On-site Support: Travel approximately 50% to project sites, with more frequent travel during key project milestones, to capture project progress and provide on-site support.

Qualifications & Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA/BAA/BFA) in Interior Design or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 1–2 years of interior design experience.
  • Proficiency in design software, including AutoCAD/Revit, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Experience with SketchUp and other technology-based design tools is required.
  • Strong verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
  • Experience with a construction management tool like Procore is preferred.
  • Professional certification, such as CIDR ACCR NDIQ, LEED – Green or AP, or CHD – Certified Healthcare Designer is preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Combination of field and office work.
  • Frequent travel to project sites.
  • Field work involves exposure to the elements, loud noises, and uneven ground.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.

Classification & Compensation:

  • Full-time, salaried, exempt position.
